How Did Bible Heroes Pray?

"Children possess an insatiable curiosity," Mona Hodgson, author of How Did Bible Heroes Pray?, writes in a note to parents. "One thing they often wonder about is prayer. Did the men and women of the Bible kneel to pray? Did they only pray at night? Did they pray outside?" Hodgson's picture book answers all these questions and more, while encouraging children to follow in biblical heroes' footsteps.

We learn, for example, that Daniel prayed on his knees, three times a day. ("You can talk to God down on your knees, too.") Samuel prayed as he lay in bed. ("You can pray when you lie in your bed, too.") Jesus prayed by himself, at times. ("You can talk to God when you are by yourself, too.") Hannah prayed to God silently. ("You can pray to God silently in your heart, too.") And so on.

Each assertion about a biblical character is backed up by a Bible citation, making it easy for parents to study up on the subject. The illustrations by Hallie Gillett are bright and colorful throughout.

What I Like: This simple book is so effective! The point comes across clear as can be: You can pray to God in any position, at any time, in any need. Just pray!

What I Dislike: The cartoonish illustrations aren't really my style, but my preschooler seems to like them.

Overall Rating: Very good.

Age Appeal: According to the publisher, 4 - 8, but I'd say toddler to kindergarten.
