God Made Puppies (Happy Day Books)

Genesis 1:25 tells us God made many wonderful things… including animals! One great way to share this idea with youngsters is by reading God Made Puppies with them. Written by Marian Bennett, this sturdy board book features familiar high-frequency words, simple sentences, large type, and repetition. For example, the opening pages say, “God made puppies. God made some very big. He made some very small.” The text is accompanied by bright, adorable puppy pictures created by artist Michelle Lash-Ruff. The illustrations feature a variety of breeds.

What I Like: The vocabulary and repetition used in the story makes it particularly well suited for pre-readers. The appealing illustrations will make it a favorite! The book also gives the verse from Genesis that I mentioned above, which provides a nice opening for parents to talk about creation.

What I Dislike: This is a minor dislike, but some of the lines rhyme, others don’t. At times, that makes the story a little awkward to read out loud.

Overall Rating: Very Good

Age Appeal: 4-8, but I think younger children will enjoy it too.

We have some of the "God Made..." books at our house (they were my husband's when he was little) and both my kids love them. They are simple, but greatly appealing to small children!

With such cute pictures, they are greatly appealing to adults (like me!) too.
