The First Rainbow

The First Rainbow, written by Lois Rock and illustrated by Sophie Allsopp, retells the story of Noah’s Ark. The story shows Noah, his wife, and sons as they build the ark, load it with animals, and endure the flood. The ending depicts Noah’s altar to God in the forefront with a colorful rainbow stretched overhead.

What I Like: With warm, muted colors, the illustrations were pleasing and had enough detail to capture my attention. They held what I might call a traditional Bible story look and feel to them—nothing exceptional, but still very well done—and depicted people of varying ethnicity. The storytelling was straightforward and simple, with an appropriate-sized chunk of text per picture spread.

What I Dislike: No Scripture reference was provided in the book. If I were not familiar with the story, I’d want to know where in the Bible to find it. I also thought a few of the phrases might be a bit old for the intended audience, such as, “Still the anxious days went by.”
