Favorite Secular Book: I Like Myself

My top pick for secular books is, I Like Myself, written by Karen Beaumont in rhythmic, zany text. The watercolor illustrations by David Catrow are reminiscent of Dr. Seuss. This cute little African-American girl may be small, but she's not embarrassed by it. She loves the way she looks inside and outside. She loves the way it feels to be herself. Although there is no mention of God in this book, the moral is to love yourself just the way you are - just the way God made you. This cheerful little girl is sure to boost any readers self esteem.

What I Like: Everything. Rhyming text. Positive attitude.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent

Age Appeal: Preschool to Second Grade.

Publishing Info: Harcourt Children's Books ; ISBN 0-439-79905-8 ; 2005

I will also recommend this book. The illustrations are delightful! And the text is purely inspiring. A warning though: one page shows skeletons. It talks about liking me "on the inside", so the illustrations are appropriate, but startling if you're not expecting them.

Overall, a GREAT book!
