You can find adventure, drama, and excitement in The Story for Kids: Discover the Bible from Beginning to End. It literally goes from the beginning to the end of the Bible, starting with creation passages from Genesis and traveling all the way to the throne in Revelation. There are 31 chapters, with titles like “Out of Egypt” and “The Birth of the King”. Each chapter takes Scripture selections and puts them in storybook form. The chapters range in size from 4-11 pages in length and contain at least one simple black-and-white illustration. Overall, the book focuses on God moving in the world to speak, act, love, and ultimately redeem humanity. As the publisher puts it, “It’s a Bible that reads like a novel.”
Although Scripture is quoted verbatim from the New International Reader’s Version of the Bible, in order to maintain a chapter book feel, the verse numbers are gone. The book is also organized chronologically. In cases where multiple versions of the same events occur (as seen in the gospels), the narrative weaves the accounts together into one coherent picture. In addition, the publisher provides some background information to link parts of the Bible together. They denote these transitions with italic font to differentiate it from Scripture.
The book has a forward from Max Lucado and Randy Frazee. There are two or three discussion questions at the end of each chapter. The end of the book has an index that lists the Bible Excerpts used for each chapter.
What I Like: For youngsters wanting to read through the Bible, this book offers a friendly format. The discussion questions make it well suited to use as a devotional book or to spur dialogue in a Sunday School setting. The transitional paragraphs help fill in historical holes to make the entire text more understandable.
What I Dislike:Nothing
Overall Rating: Excellent
Age Appeal: Ages 9-12. Note: since the Bible is quoted directly, the vocabulary is advanced in some places.
